[ it doesn't take long for dutch to connect the dots, and her eyebrows rise at the same time that a smile threatens to curl at the corners of her mouth. ]
You're a bounty hunter.
[ it's mostly a guess based on what he's saying, but —so's she, and it takes one to know one, doesn't it? though dutch isn't nearly as good with technical bits and bobs and building things as he seems to be. that's more johnny's turf. ]
Yep... Well, sort of. [He continues tinkering. This is significantly easier to talk about, than bitching about raw meat.] I guess it ain't called bounty hunting no more when it's more of a "save people for profit, 'cause being a hero don't mean our meals are paid for."
[ dutch's amusement deepens and there's something warm in it now. it reminds her of johnny's bragging sometimes, her own notion of saving the quad and the entire damn j, of winning a war against a woman wearing the same face as her. she isn't a hero and she's not doing it because it's the right thing, but she's doing it. that counts for something, or it should. ]
Yeah, but I figure once you've saved the galaxy twice- [once] - you can fling it around all you want.
[It's still a bitter word to swallow, honestly. Rocket has not embraced the idea of saving a world that's dropkicked him time and again, despite Quill's stirring speech about them choosing to "give a shit." He's still with the team, of course- a few stolen batteries be damned- but it's still a complicated thing.
Here, it's just bragging rights. What else does he have? He's three feet tall, shoots good, has a genius IQ, and is probably one of the best damn mechanical engineers around, but sometimes none of that impresses as much as good old-fashioned galaxy saving.]
[ dutch's grin has far fewer teeth, or none as sharp as his, but that doesn't mean there isn't a similar quality to it. ]
Fancy that. [ after a beat, she adds: ] Maybe I'm just not into the whole galaxy saving bit. [ never mind that she's starting a war to save hers, too. but her motivation isn't entirely heroic. ]
[He scoffs and goes back to prying apart the panel he's working on.] I don't think anyone's into it, and if they are- they're a buncha lying jerks. It just kinda happens to people, so either you walk away and risk gettin' caught up in the blast radius or you go all in, and hope you get rewarded for it.
Some people genuinely give a shit about saving the galaxy. Saving people.
[ dutch knows people like that. johnny, mostly, but d'avin, too. she isn't like them; she can choose to give a shit, but she can just as well not. johnny's heart is so damn big, he always gives a shit. ]
I'm sure the galaxy hasn't done anything wrong by them either. I mean, I live in it, so there's that, but beyond that, there ain't much to really talk about.
[ that maybe the ones like johnny who give a shit do it because they have the luxury of it, because they haven't experienced the full cruelty of life. she knows better now. johnny's been through plenty of shit and he still gives a damn, and people like delle seyah kendry have lived a life of privilege and couldn't care less. ]
[He looks like he's about to leave that lying there- shrug it off, call it a difference of opinion, whatever. But something about the way she says it sticks in his craw, and after a few seconds of hesitation, he sighs.]
Yeah, some people are just maniacs who can get put through hell and come out the other end fine, I guess. Dunno how they do it.

[ dutch isn't, but that's mostly because she doesn't quite believe him. that, and because she doesn't know his galaxy and hence doesn't really care.
the good shooting and the engineering would probably impress dutch more. ]

[people just aren't as impressed with him as they should be and it's very sad.]
