Maybe it speaks to the broken things in him that letting her put knives near his face is marginally easier than having conversations that could touch on things softer than they've quite been with one another. Is it someone from home, has she made a friend, who are you dating? Yeah, hardpass.
So instead, he takes off the hat, to reveal what had clearly been A Mistake. It's not that he hadn't had a mirror, it was that when you were cutting your own hair, that only helped so much. Please rescue this disaster. The only upside is that he hadn't cut it so short there's nothing to work with.]
