[ a shadow. dutch is chasing a shadow. it's a good thing that she's damn good at finding people. she spots him eventually and gives a jaunty little wave. and then begins crossing the distance to where he is. ]
[ not nearly as funny as it would have been if he'd waved back, but it's a different kind of good. the space is all the invitation she needs, moving into the space he's vacated. ]
[ Cat and mouse. He has fond memories of this one, in another place, with another person he's pushed away. She isn't one of his ghosts. Selina's asleep in those pods like everyone else. ]
[ Bruce stands, stretches. Soft in his old age, he thinks, as he lets her have a head start. Then he's after her. ]
[ the head start doesn't go unnoticed. she doesn't know whether to appreciate it or be annoyed by it. point is, dutch may not be batman, but she's good at this -- at running, the layout of their surroundings long committed to memory, at dodging any attempts at capture. at finding people or things and thinking on her feet, too.
(she's best at killing, but she doesn't do that anymore. not if she can help it, not if it's a human being on the other end. hullen are a whole other story.)
and so she leads bruce on a merry chase across the roofs and through the alleyways, skirting around the edge of the jungle. ]
[ She's good at this. He tries to cut her off a few times, disappearing into side streets and showing up again at intersections. It's more about the chase, for him, than the end point of cornering her. One should only corner a predator sparingly, even playfully it carries a risk he doesn't enjoy bringing to the forefront. It's important, to have the rush of adrenaline without the certain clamp of death coming if they're caught. That way the luck is enjoyable. ]
[ dutch has better control of herself than lash out just because she's physically cornered. emotionally, now, that's another matter entirely, but that's not the game they're playing right now.
(she's glad for it; she knows just how much ammunition she's already handed to him.) ]
Took you long enough. [ she says when he does catch up with her, grin in her voice and her eyes, adrenaline a heady drug. ]
[ He has plenty of ammunition. It says something of her capacity to extend trust, or perhaps his capacity to refuse much of himself to anyone. Their understanding is — enough. They worry for each other, and that's new, and enough too. ]
[ there are some lessons khlyen had tried to teach her that dutch has failed at. she usually thinks that for the better; she's not a good person but she isn't who khlyen wanted her to be, not entirely, and that's worth something. (it's still worth something now that she no longer hates khlyen, that she -- misses him, even. it's complicated.)

[ this is one of those lessons khlyen could never make stick with her: do not care for others. don't love them, don't be friends with them. use them. kill them, hurt them if you have to, but do not ever care. it'll make you weak, it'll make you soft.
there's a horribly soft part inside her, warm and molten because of johnny jaqobis and his softness, the way he wants to help and help and help, all give and no take. (johnny's learned to take now and dutch has learned to give and it works.) she can turn that part off, of course she can, but -- she doesn't always.

[ It is a precious set of people, who make it there. Perhaps they can't be friends, or more than allies. He doubts he can build her a citadel, or she for him — they aren't safe people to be around. But a harbour, yes. Where the winds are light, the sea is calm. A temporary place, one of respite. ]
[ He doesn't quite smile. But the fall into comfortable silence says enough. ]
[ it is and isn’t about that. they’re not kind or gentle people, not harmless by any stretch of the imagination— but there’s something to be said for understanding and acknowledging someone else’s harsh edges and sharpness. it’s not safe, but it’s something.

a family. dutch has johnny. she had khlyen, father figure and mentor and someone she’s loved and hated in near equal measure. someone who’s always manipulated her. ]
They’re asleep? [ is that loading the gun? her tone is softer than usual, but only barely. she has no intention of shooting. ]
[ She has a family. She's come from somewhere, she's young, she has a future. Maybe her life — like Cassandra's — will never be easy or safe. But she'd fight. ]
They're safe.
[ There's a current of relief. He'll never not be glad they're at least here, where he can look from the outside without worry — that they won't have memories of being in the stasis rooms. Everything else that he's done, maybe they can face it, he doesn't know. ]
[ she didn’t always have a family.she didn’t know where she came from for so long, pieces of her khlyen had held hostage. she doesn’t think she has a future because the war can only end with her dead, one way or another — but aneela isn’t here and there’s no war. at least none that hinges on dutch killing the person she’s face she’s wearing and herself with her.
